Crowns

Dental crowns are a popular option for those with damaged, chipped, or stained teeth. These restorations are designed to wrap around the entire surface of the tooth, restoring its appearance, size, and shape. With advancements in technology, crowns are now made to look as similar to your natural teeth as possible. Porcelain dental crowns are one of the most popular types of crowns, as they are shaped and colored to look like your natural teeth. They even feel like normal teeth, which is why porcelain crowns are considered a cosmetic dentistry treatment. They are also a dental restoration, as they restore function to your teeth.

When a porcelain crown is placed, it covers the damage completely, protecting the tooth from further harm. The tooth won’t get worse because it’s sealed tightly, so you’ll be able to eat without discomfort. Porcelain crowns can even be used to replace missing teeth. Dental bridges are a non-invasive treatment that replaces missing teeth. This treatment uses at least three porcelain crowns, with one being used as a replacement tooth. Instead of getting surgery for an implant to support the tooth, the replacement tooth is held in place by two other porcelain crowns, one on each tooth next to the gap.

With proper care, dental crowns can last for many years, providing a durable and long-lasting solution to dental problems. If you are considering getting a dental crown, you will initially come in for a consultation. If you are eligible for a dental crown, molds of your teeth will be taken to create a custom-fit crown for you. While you wait for the creation of your dental crown, you will wear a temporary crown to protect your tooth. Once your crowns have been made, they will be permanently attached to your tooth with a special cement mixture.

Generally, dental crowns could last from 5 to 15 years. It depends on the crown’s quality and more so on how well the user follows the proper dental hygiene procedures and other personal oral practices.
Not necessarily. We recommend a crown when the visible part of your tooth is at risk of fracture during a function, like eating. These situations include teeth with large fillings, Diagram of a root canal weak cusps, and also teeth with significant cracks. Crowns completely cover the exposed part of your tooth and provide added stability. Teeth that have had root canal treatment often require a dental crown because of the need to remove a significant amount of tooth structure. Plus, removing the nerve can cause teeth to become brittle after root canal treatment. However, a broken tooth that is responding normally and without infection can often be restored with a crown only, and many of such teeth are restored successfully to provide many years of service.
Root canal treatment is designed to soothe and treat a painful tooth which in the process makes the tooth more brittle and dry, to avoid fracture or cracks it grants placing a crown to support the structure.
An anesthetic will numb the patient of the pain as the tooth is being prepared for the crown. However, just like with other dental works, a degree of sensitivity may be anticipated once the procedure is over. It may disappear for about a few days.
If your crowns are worn down or damaged, give us a call so that we can plan replacements. We may need to remove the crown and provide you with a new temporary crown until your new permanent crowns are complete. If you’ve had your crowns for several years, you may be troubled by their aesthetics. Older materials used to create crowns were not as natural-looking and lifelike as today’s modern crowns. Metal crowns and porcelain-fused-to-metal may be a giveaway that you’ve had dental work done, and we completely understand that you want your smile to look its best.
Because temporary crowns are made from acrylic, which is less strong than the metal, ceramic or porcelain material of a permanent crown, you must take extra precautions. Limit the amount of chewing you do on the side of your mouth where your temporary crown is located. Avoid chewing on hard candies, nuts and very crunchy fresh vegetables such as carrots on the same side of the mouth as your temporary crown. Until your permanent crown is in place, don’t eat sticky desserts or candy, including caramels, licorice, jelly beans, taffy, toffee and gummy bears, as they could pull the temporary crown off your tooth. Avoid chewing gum for the same reason.
Hot foods: Some individuals experience a mild-to-severe sensitivity in and around a crowned tooth when eating hot foods, particularly if they are affected by gum recession. If the problem persists, consult your dentist as the crown’s fit may require adjustment. Cold foods: Although they do not harm your crown, such foods can trigger sensitivity similar to that caused by hot foods if any part of your gum recedes enough to expose the root above a crowned tooth. Your dentist may suggest that you use a toothpaste made especially for sensitive teeth; such toothpaste work by blocking the sensation traveling from the tooth to the nerves. Sugary foods: Avoid constant exposure to sugary drinks, candy or gum, keep snacking to a minimum, and brush or rinse your teeth after eating chewy or sticky foods such as dried fruit.
Dental crowns are generally safe. Most problems regarding dental crowns would stem from the design and bite . When done properly , there are not any common risks or complications. Rare cases of allergies to the material, especially metals have been reported.
When the gum heals, it can shrink back further. This is generally why the final filling/crown cannot be applied immediately. It may take about several weeks after the surgery. If the treatment proceeds with the filling or crown right after the margin might be evident in the mouth after a few weeks.
Porcelain is used to cover pressed ceramic or zirconia crowns. This gives the ideal color match and is more long-lasting than a crown made solely with porcelain.
