Inlays & Onlays

Traditional dental fillings can cause a significant reduction in the strength of a natural tooth, up to 50%. Fortunately, inlays and onlays provide an excellent alternative. These tooth restorations are bonded directly onto the tooth using special high-strength resins and can actually increase tooth strength by up to 75%. Onlays can provide an excellent alternative when tooth damage isn’t extensive enough to merit a full dental crown.

Inlays and onlays can be made from a variety of materials, including porcelain, gold, and composite resin. Porcelain has become increasingly popular in recent years due to its strength and ability to match the natural color of teeth. Inlays are used inside the cusp tips of the tooth, similar to a filling. Onlays are a more substantial reconstruction, similar to inlays, but they extend out over one or more of the cusps of the tooth. The process for placing inlays and onlays typically requires two appointments. During the first appointment, your teeth are cleaned and impressions are taken to send to the lab for fabrication. During your second appointment, your inlay or onlay is placed into your teeth and cemented. Your dentist will check the fit to ensure comfort.

Most of the risks associated with inlays and onlays are related to the anesthetic used to numb the area around the tooth. This allows dentists to properly clean and prepare your tooth for the inlay or onlay while you rest comfortably in the dentist’s chair. Inform your dentist if you are taking any medication that may react to the anesthetic. Our experienced dental team will create a customized treatment plan for you. Inlays and onlays offer a great alternative to traditional fillings and can help increase the strength of your natural teeth while providing a natural appearance.

Onlays usually last between 10 to 15 years. Similar to many other dental restorations, onlays do not last a lifetime and may eventually need to be replaced. Following the proper guidelines can help prolong the life of your restorations and preserve your oral health.
Seldom do patients have a permanent onlay fall out. But it can happen, which constitutes a dental emergency. At that time, the person should contact the dentist right away. When the individual has the onlay reset, the dentist will go through the same procedure.
Some patients report being able to eat within an hour after receiving a dental inlay. However, some dentists recommend waiting a few hours to get used to the feel of the dental inlay and to reduce the risk of any sensitivity.
You may be numb for a period of time after the procedure; avoid chewing, biting, and eating on this side until the numbness wears off. If hungry, try smooth yogurt or other soft foods until the anesthesia wears off. flossing, taking extra care not to loosen the temporary restoration.
Inlays and onlays are used, much like fillings, to fill or cover the area where a cavity once was. It minimizes the possibility of further decay to the existing tooth.
Even if your tooth could be treated with a dental filling, you might consider getting a longer-lasting onlay anyway. Dental onlays are often made of porcelain. Porcelain has a fine white color that allows it to blend very naturally with your teeth. On top of that, porcelain is far more durable than a plastic filling.
Inlays and Onlays are similar as they are a type of indirect restoration. However, the difference is that Inlays are indirect restorations which do not have cuspal coverage and are within the body of the tooth. Onlays are indirect restorations that cover both body and cusps of teeth.
Onlays are made from durable materials that look like natural teeth. The fit is more secure than a filling, and more of the natural tooth structure is preserved than with a crown. Onlays also strengthen the tooth, making it less likely that additional work will be needed in the future.
Some minor discomfort in the area is possible following the crown or onlay. Sometimes, depending on circumstances, the tooth and surrounding tissues may remain sore for a few weeks post treatment. The three most common reasons for pain are: Sore jaw joint from having your mouth open for a prolonged time. Contact us if you have any concern.
If the temporary crown comes off, leave the temporary crown off the tooth and call us for further instruction.
